Wisdom of Proverbs

There are six things the LORD hates –
no, seven things he detests:
haughty eyes
a lying tongue,
hands that kill the innocent,
a heart that plots evil,
feet that race to do wrong,
a false witness who pours out lies,
a person who sows discord in a family.
(Proverbs 6:16-19)

The book of Proverbs was written by Solomon, son of King David. It is a book full of wisdom to guide us in making  good decisions and a path for rightful living.

Now, let’s take a closer look at this Proverb and dissect it line by line. Webster defines the word, detests as hate, abhor, abominate, having a strong aversion or intense dislike for.

First, haughty eyes mean a proud look. This is a person who is arrogant, shows an insulting attitude who exalts himself as better, smarter or more important than other people. Pride is like a trunk of a tree where all other sins spring forth. James 4:6 says, “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.”   We have to be careful about this especially if you’re rich,  educated, have been blessed with a lot of skills and talents that you look down with those who have less. Whatever skill or resource that is used improperly will ultimately be taken from you and I don’t think you would like that.

Second is a lying tongue. It’s easy for us to lie as if it’s normal and acceptable. It is not. This is detestable in God’s eyes.

Third, hands that kill the innocent. You might say this does not refer to you for you don’t have the capacity to kill innocent people. You haven’t had any abortion or never will. But, this verse also refers to killing your enemy in your mind without acting out the evil per se. If murder is done, this also implies to the making of laws to justify the act when you are in the position to do so.

Fourth, a heart that plots evil. In our heart and mind is where everything is first manufactured. Whatever you devise in your soul (soul refers to your mind, emotion and will) will ultimately be acted out in any form that will bring harm to your neighbor.

Fifth, feet that race to do wrong. This is carrying out of the evil which has been fabricated in the heart. You can’t wait to shed blood with eager anticipation. You seize every opportunity to bring harm to another.

Sixth, a false witness who pours out lies. This is willful giving of false testimony under oath in court. A person who perverts justice wrongs the innocent and releases the guilty. He is disloyal to his county and opposes his own conscience.

This also refers to slander. Giving of false statement to harm someone’s reputation or business. It’s very easy to fall into this trap especially if your envious of other’s status in life. You want to have what they have but since you can’t get it, you mar the reputation and integrity so you won’t feel so bad about yourself. You also give inaccurate information to gain friends and put the other as an outsider.

Seventh, a person who sows discord in a family. This is dissension and strife among brothers in a family. Always promote love, forgiveness and unity for this bring God’s blessings.

We shouldn’t take lightly what God detests. If he hates it, we should too.
